Ann Radcliffe

The life

The most popular novelist of the 1790s, Radcliffe wrote gothic romances set in France and Italy that she had never visited. She was paid an unprecedented sum for The Mysteries of Udolpho and then stopped publishing.

She invented the explained supernatural and made suspense respectable.
