An insurance clerk in Prague who asked a friend to burn his manuscripts; the friend refused, and the twentieth century got its most quoted adjective. Kafka wrote at night, in German, in a city that was dissolving around him.
He turned bureaucracy into metaphysics and made anxiety a literary form.
