George Eliot

The life

Mary Ann Evans took a man's name to be taken seriously as a novelist, and then outgrew the disguise: her books are the most intellectually ambitious in Victorian fiction. She translated German philosophy and lived outside marriage, which cost her socially and gave her material.

She invented the psychological novel in English: characters judged by their inner lives, not their outcomes.
