Leo Tolstoy

The life

An aristocrat who ran a school for peasant children, served as an artillery officer and later renounced his own novels as immoral. Tolstoy describes a ballroom and a battlefield with the same patience, until the difference between them is moral rather than scenic.

He made the novel large enough to argue with history itself.
