Matthew Lewis

The life

Writing The Monk at nineteen, Lewis produced the novel that gave gothic fiction its reputation for scandal. He was a diplomat, a plantation owner and a friend of Byron's, and his book was prosecuted for obscenity within a decade.

He took the gothic to its extremes and made transgression the subject, not the side effect.
