The Beowulf poet

“Hwæt!”
The life

Nothing is known of the poet who composed Beowulf, not even a name. The poem survived in a single manuscript copied around 1000, damaged by fire in 1731.

The oldest long poem in English, and the earliest proof that the language could carry an epic.
